So I’m a weirdo, I’m sure this is no surprise to you. I’ve been running TrueNAS in a virtual machine (already a terrible start), and instead of passing a separate HBA, I was just manually passing the block devices to the VMs.
One of the drives gave up the ghost, thankfully well in the warranty period, so I got my money back and I bought another one. (still cost me double the price of what I bought it at, thanks AI). I plugged it in, and started the resilvering process. It took… an uncomfortably long amount of time to resilver, and even then, I was getting lots of read/write errors.
Then after I tried forcing it, I was met with the dreaded “cannot import ‘core’: insufficient replicas”.
I think this means my shit is toast

So I lost about 12 TB of media and backups of my local PC. That… hurt. Thankfully the REALLY important things were backed up to Mega.
So yeah, don’t do what I did. Just run TrueNAS as an appliance, and if you REALLY have to put it in a VM, pass in a HBA.
